Barreirinhas lies on the Rio Preguiças and is the gateway to the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. Set out in a 4×4: it’s 18 kilometers of sandy trails and streams to ford. Then it’s time to kick off your sandals and climb 40 meters up sand dunes. At the top the view helps you recover the stamina to drive whatever distance might be necessary: the endless white dunes sculpted sinuously by the winds, sheltering crystal-blue rainwater ponds that reflect the blue sky. Words cannot do the sight justice. Vassouras is a small fishing village nearby inhabited by simple friendly folk—plus scores of tufted capuchin monkeys hoping visitors will turn up to share their food with them. On your way there, or back, take the time to get to know the historic center of São Luís and admire its Portuguese fortress; enjoy the reggae—the city’s official rhythm.
