Story They Tell…

“You feel this wonderful energy as you watch the sunset from the dunes. It is the perfect end to a day of sea and wonderful landscapes.”

O. Oliveira

Where the breezes decide the direction you’re going in.

From the coastline to the harsh inland beauty of the sertão, steeped in folklore. Local culture is represented at the hands of craftspeople, and by the laughter elicited by some of Brazil’s best-known and most talented comedians.  In the state of Ceará, your path is always breathtaking, whether you wander barefoot on the sand or defy the waves on a jangada—the local fishermen’s raft. The setting invites you to get away from this world. Some hotels actually have neither televisions nor intercoms, to make sure their guests are not disturbed. Jericoacoara is one of the world’s most beautiful beaches: soothing breezes suggest directions, and make the place a paradise for kite surfing aficionados.  Breathe a sigh of happiness, and celebrate the wonders of Brazil’s north-east as the sun sets behind your bungalow’s charming garden of palm trees. Away from the coast, a lesson in Brazilian history and art.

WHERE TO STAY

RANCHO DO PEIXE (INN)

PRAIA DO PREÁ. This inn is living proof that more can be less. Built from local material (timber taken from re-forested areas, with carnaúba straw for thatch), the 22 bungalows rest on raised decks and are surrounded by palm trees and dunes. The intention is to entice guests into the bosom of nature.

VILA KALANGO

JERICOACORA. The Vila and its 24 rooms lie close by the famous Duna do Pôr do Sol  (or, literally, Sunset Dune) surrounded by palm trees and cashew-apple trees. While rustic, the decoration is creative, invented by the employees themselves and local crafts people. There are no televisions or intercoms in the rooms, meaning that you can isolate yourself and enjoy nature without anyone bothering you.

ESSENZA HOTEL

JERICOACORA. Essenza Hotel was built facing the sea, near sunset dune, inside the Jericoacoara National Park. It offers a unique experience, in the best site in Jericocoara: a delicate paradise of dunes and palm trees. Every room enjoys a spectacular view.
